Chapter Eight

Quilo

The ringing of my phone woke me up from a blissful sleep as I fumbled around to find it. Checking the clock on the wall, I saw that it was only a little after five in the morning, and the snow was still falling freely with no intention of stopping. Already having an idea that it was probably Ms. Sharon or Vanessa, I quickly answered.

“Hello.”

“Good morning, Quilo. It’s Sharon. I was calling to let you know that I’ve seen the snow, and I’m already on my way to the shelter to get started for the morning.”

“Thank you, Ms. Sharon,” I replied gratefully. “I don’t know what I’d do without you. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Don’t worry about a thing,” she shushed. “I’m sure me and the ladies will be fine for a day. Besides, you live thirty minutes away, and that’s too far to make that drive. Not to mention, they haven’t even started to clean the streets yet. You stay right there at home. I’ll call you if we need you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive. Now get some rest,” she replied before disconnecting the call.

Placing the phone back on the coffee table, I got up to hit the switch on the fireplace, but not before glancing over at Arya. She looked so peaceful as she slept, almost angelic. Her light snores filled the room as I took the blanket at her feet to cover her body. I stood by silently as I watched her chest rise and fall.

Thoughts of her past came to mind and caused a wave of rage to rush over me that I had to quickly shake off. What was it about this woman that made me weak? Why did I feel the need to want to protect her? I hardly knew her, but yet, I wondered what it would be like if she were mine.

“If you were mine, a nigga would have to kill me to ever lay his hand on you again,” I whispered.

It was then that her eyes popped open. I could see the look of fear in her eyes as she looked up at me before finally calming down once her eyes landed on mine.

“You’re safe. I promise,” I vowed.

“What time is it?” she asked groggily.

“Almost five-thirty.”

“Has the snow melted away yet?”

“Just the opposite,” I chuckled. “It’s actually worse. But don’t worry. Sharon and Vanessa are handling the shelter today.”

“What about my sessions?” she asked, concerned.

There it was again. That care for others before she even cared to think about herself. It was that same sense of selflessness that kept drawing me to her. Smiling, I kneeled down and stroked the same cheek that was once bruised before kissing it. Truth be told, I’d kiss all her bruises away. All she had to do was tell me where to start.

Her eyes looked at me tenderly as her breathing quickened. Our eyes locked as our faces inched closer together. I could tell that she was hesitant about what was going to happen next, and if I was honest with myself, so was I.
